Barrier Adaptation
Introduction to the project
One of the key issues was the 102 barriers which were recorded. In varying degrees, these prevent migrating fish to reach their breeding grounds up stream. From the survey, WRT have created a priority list of barriers which need to be adapted or modified to ease fish migration, the main one being School Weir. Below you’ll see which barrier is currently being worked on and why.

Roly Poly Weir
Date: Expected Summer 2026
Location: Concrete weir in the Byes, opposite Roly Poly Field on the east bank, with Salter’s Meadow on the west bank.
Works: Westcountry Rivers Trust will be working in the river to add a notch to the concrete weir. This barrier is currently difficult for fish to navigate because for the majority of the time it separates two sections of the river. Adding a notch will help to create an easier route for fish, giving access to the top and bottom sections of the river.
