Introduction to the project
One of the key issues was the 102 barriers which were recorded. In varying degrees, these prevent migrating fish to reach their breeding grounds up stream. From the survey, WRT have created a priority list of barriers which need to be adapted or modified to ease fish migration, the main one being School Weir. Below you’ll see which barrier is currently being worked on and why.

Roly Poly Weir
Date: Modified Thursday 13 August 2026
Significance: This was the first weir modification for the “Opening the Sid” project. Fish populations are now able to access a suitable channel to link the waterways above and below the weir.
Location: Concrete weir in the Byes, opposite Roly Poly Field on the east bank, with Salter’s Meadow on the west bank. Situated near Sid Meadow within the Byes, it takes its name from the nearby bank which children delight in rolling down. Grid Reference SY 12883 88344
Change: A central notch was cut out, approx. 30cm x 30cm, creating a preferential flow channel with enough depth for fish to swim up. Prior to the intervention the flow was evenly spread across the concrete structure. An eel rope is positioned on the true left bank.
