Our Work

Projects

Our work can be best seen across a variety of projects. These are aimed at helping us to record and monitor the health of the river, so that we have foundation or baseline to work from. This will help identify any any issues within the catchment, and will inform experts with any adaptations and suggestions that could be put forward to improve habitats, knowledge, and practices with in the catchment to  improve water quality and biodiversity.

Main Project: Opening the Sid

Our main project within the catchment is called ‘Opening the Sid’. This aims to adapt or remove barriers up and down the river to drastically improve fish migration and habitats. In recent years, fish numbers have been steadily declining along the river. The Westcountry Rivers Trust are helping to carry out surveys along the river to identfy barriers and potential areas for good or improved habitat development.

So far, School Weir in the Byes near the Toll House is proving to be the biggest barrier species such as sea trout face. A further 27 barriers have been identified between this large obstacle and Sidford. Take a look at the project in more detail and suggestions for how we hope to adapt and remove some of these barriers to reinvigorate the river.

Volunteers catching the fish to physically lift them up and over School Weir to breeding grounds.

All Projects

Alongside our main project around Opening the Sid, we have several on-going and active projects to support the wider work of our catchment plan. Take a look at each project in more detail below, and please do get in touch if you’re interested in getting involved, donating or asking for advice.
